Blog: The Cat is out of the Bag
A massive psychological exercise has been undertaken by the MMM to convince the people that the government will very, very soon be defeated on a no confidence motion and that general elections will be held and would see the MMM/MSM sweeping to a landslide victory by sweeping all the seats. Nothing could be more farcical, far from the truth and unrealistic.
Though a bubble was created when Sir Anerood Jugnauth resigned, after reducing State House to a second Sun Trust and used that new Sun Trust of his making as a political platform, that bubble has burst to produce empty air. As the Latin poet Horace put it: Parturient montes, nascetur ridiculus mus, meaning "Mountains will be in labour, the birth will be a single laughable little mouse".
Nobody, except with rare exceptions, saw in that indecent gesture of the new leader of the opposition an undermining of the office of the president. After undermining that supreme office and, now being reduced a simple citizen who is enjoying all the privileges of a past president with an official car, close protection and a massive tax free pension, he has embarked on an official attack on ICAC. The new leader of the opposition Sir Anerood Jugnauth has challenged ICAC to prove a case against his son Pravind and has added that this case is pure mischief. The words he used are " Mo mett au défi l'ICAC prouve enn case contre Pravind. Péna okenn case. C'est de la pure méchanceté". After denying the obvious, namely, that the perception is that he has resigned as the politician/president to save the skin of his son he has finally conceded indirectly that this is the case. That statement is very revealing and must be a wakeup call for the population. Are the people going to vote for a man who has no respect for institutions when the interests of his family are at stake? Sir Anerood Jugnauth should know or should have known that it is not for ICAC to prove a case but for the prosecution in a court of law. ICAC's role is to investigate and gather all the facts and submit the case file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) who will decide whether on the facts submitted to him, there should be a prosecution or not and for what offence. If there is a decision to prosecute the matter, it will be determined by an independent and impartial court. Of what is Sir Anerood Jugnauth, the new leader of the opposition, afraid? There is no doubt that if by a miracle the MMM/MSM alliance is returned to power it will either scrap ICAC or change its membership. Who are they going to appoint? Would it be their stooges who will be their yes men and act according to their behests? That is a real possibility given how Sir Anerood Jugnauth scrapped ECO and how he showed little or no respect for the office of the president. There is also a strong possibility that the MMM/MSM alliance will review the powers of the DPP so that it can have a say on who is prosecuted. It is the only way that alliance and especially Sir Anerood Jugnauth can make sure that his son or some other family member will never be prosecuted.
When Sir Anerood Jugnauth had Sir Gaetan Duval arrested in 1989 for complicity for murder on the mere word of a habitual criminal whose deposition was recorded at his house at La Caverne, was it not an act of méchanceté (mischief)? That case dragged for months until the then DPP decided not to prosecute. Was that done to suit the political convenience of Sir Anerood Jugnauth who was then prime minister? However Sir Gaetan Duval never uttered "Mo mette Anerood Jugnauth au défi prouve enn case contre moi". Sir Gaetan Duvcal fought his case before the courts of the land because he respected the office of the DPP and the judiciary. Today the cat is out of the bag. Sir Anerood Jugnauth has become the new leader of the opposition to combat ICAC and possibly the office of the DPP in order to ensure that his son who has been incapable of leading a party is not prosecuted. He has no respect for institutions and will use them to further his own personal and family ends. This is the man whom Paul Berenger has called upon to allegedly save Mauritius. How pathetic!
