Recently, the inhabitants of Rodrigues have felt very much concerned as they have heard of repeated earth tremours near their island. This concern took another dimension following the January 2010 Haiti deadly earthquake. In the wake, Mauritians have also started to ask questions. This article attempts to give a clear scientific analysis of the geophysical set up in our region with focus on Rodrigues concerning earth tremours and on Mauritius concerning any imminent volcanic upsurge.

From lies to deceit, from one trick to another… For many years the UK (and the US) have led the world to believe that the islands of the Chagos Archipelago in the Indian Ocean never had any indigenous population, except for the giant tortoises in its waters and flying seagulls around its shores, that life could not be sustained on these islands, so no Robinson Crusoes or Man Fridays except for American military personnel and perhaps a few Mad Dogs and Englishmen.

Since the militant era of the 1960’s and 70’s, politicians like Dev Virahsawmy (who is also a linguist) have invented a type of phonetic writing which contravenes proper spellings and grammatical rules in the French language which they have unsuccessfully been trying to impose on the rest of the population through fascist propaganda in an attempt to force the Mauritian government to introduce this ‘language’ as a medium of instruction in our schools four decades later.

Former President Cassam Uteem is being attacked because he expressed the possibility of returning to active politics, probably by re-adhering to the MMM, to which party and values he has always been faithful like the late James Burty David was to the Labour Party.

To say that Mauritians are air-minded is to state the obvious. Those who live on an island have to be aware of the significance of both air and sea transport to their quality of life. But it is still useful to ask: To what extent are we air-minded?
