Le Matinal: Blog: Remake 2000 - for Self Interest or better Tomorrow? Blog: Remake 2000 - for Self Interest or better Tomorrow? ================================================================================ Bijaye Madhou (Guest Author) on Friday 9th of March 2012 - 00:57:00 What has gone so wrong that MMM and MSM want a remake of 2000 on condition that the President leads the opposition in the next general elections. Besides, nobody seems to be bothered that the 2000 conditions no longer exist. It is just a gimmick to fool the people. We should not forget that neither SAJ nor Paul Berenger were enthusiastic about the 2000 alliance. It was forced on them by vested interests which had scores to settle with Navin Ramgoolam and Labour. Those vested interests are disbanded. Some have joined Navin Ramgoolam since. Even the so-called main architect of that alliance says that they are coming together to defend and safeguard their personal interest and not the interests of the country. SAJ has been a hero to many when he stood up against Paul Berenger and MMM in 1983. He created the MSM with the sole objective of fighting the MMM. He did so successfully with the blessings of SSR and Labour. Paul Berenger and MMM have never forgiven SAJ for betraying the aspirations of the party and their historic leader Paul Berenger. Then how come that today MMM feels that it is their duty and destiny to help and save MSM? MMM considers Pravind Jugnauth to be a negligible quantity. Besides, all the top leaders of MSM are out on bail on an issue dubbed by Paul Bérenger as the "scandal of the century". The Medpoint scandal also forced the MSM to leave the government. A well-wisher of MSM told me that he has already warned SAJ of the intention of MMM to destroy the Jugnauth family and their interests. Everybody knows that MMM has always wanted an alliance with Labour. If only Paul Berenger could accept President Navin Ramgoolam to preside the cabinet and run the foreign policy as President Sarkozy does in France, the alliance could be concluded tomorrow. Many people feel that SAJ is too smart and intelligent to swallow the bait of MMM. At an age when he should enjoy a well-deserved retirement; he may be tempted to come back into politics to save his son and other interests. Like Dristrashtra in Mahabharata, he can only bring destruction. Somebody reminded me that the 2000 alliance was dead on proclamation day itself. MSM and MMM chose to ignore the real architect of the alliance and the vested interests which supported them. This was the main cause for the defeat of the MSM/MMM candidate at the by-election in Riviere du Rempart in 2003. The by-election was held to fill the vacant seat when SAJ became President. Rajesh Jeetah was elected on a Labour ticket. SAJ had earlier lost at the Flacq by-election. He was defeated by Satish Faugoo of Labour. In 1995, he had also lost his own seat at general elections. Navin Ramgoolam is right. There are more important things to be done till the end of his mandate. People, I am sure, will see through the chess game being played by the opposition to keep its followers within the folds. I do not understand how politicians always commit the mistake of believing that they can fool the people all the time. I strongly believe that people will take the right decision when the time comes between those who want to defend their self-interest and those who want to create a better tomorrow.
