The modern Mauritian youth does not have to be strangely ambitious to desire to pursue higher studies. However, when secondary schools have stopped educating but limit themselves to the cut-and-dry purpose of preparing the learner for examinations, it is very rare to find an educational programme that prepares the youth to think of a career. Work placement to a few Lower VI students is a timid substitute for an awakening to the potential one has to exploit for a career. Job fairs come at the end of the line to propose employment opportunities to the new recruit.

The burqa ban in France raises the live issues about the way specificities are managed in different countries. The West has known a historical heritage of racial superiority through military power, colonial oppression of weaker nations, cultural imperialism resulting from colonization, and the power of science and technology. The threat of German occupation led to a retrocession of colonized territories. The exit of colonial masters from Asia and Africa opened the doors of the former colonized into their own homes. Europe which was under reconstruction needed all its citizens, but once it reached a recognizably satisfactory level of development; its emigration laws became flexible enough to allow citizens of former colonies to seek fortune on the heart of the masters’ home.

While we publicly profess ourselves to be soldiers crusading against corruption in utter compliance with rules and procedures, our own ranks contain persons who slyly violate the very rules they call sacred outside but blaspheme behind public eye. The Gaming Regulatory Authority has not been consulted to carry out a World Poker contest. The Tourism Authority and the MTPA have joined forces to represent law and order and the rule of justice.

Many projects of educational reform do not go beyond mere show and ostentation. Authorities hide behind lack of personnel and the sophistry of a well fabricated rhetoric to silence any meaningful enquiry. Very successful ideas are bandied, borrowed from the literature of educational reform management. But in actual fact the reform is not sustained and after the period of curiosity, everything goes back to traditional practices.

It is a pity that during the 43 years of independence Mauritius has not known many coalitions that have lived through their mandate. In some cases the collapse has been due to the megalomania of certain leaders; in other cases the weakness of government in public opinion has galvanized members of coalitions to claim back their emancipation from the group for better electoral opportunities; and yet in other cases selfish ministers blinded by the fear of failure have undermined the coalition in order to regain their currency in public.
