“Mirch”, about the politics of sex, features Raima Sen's first lovemaking scene
Vinay Shukla’s Mirch will turn heads. He portrays his women as independent, strong-headed individuals who don’t think twice about using their sensuality to fool men. Raima Sen, who has never kissed on screen, says she was initially averse to the lovemaking scene in the film and refused to do it.
“Vinayji and I had a chat later and I realised that this scene was important to the film and I had to do it,” says Sen, who will be seen in a passionate encounter with newbie Arunoday Singh. Having made her debut with Shukla in Godmother (1999) also helped her believe that he would not portray the scene in a “vulgar way”. Sen says while she is not against doing bold roles, doing “things” on screen worries her because her parents “won’t like it”. However, after she saw the scene on screen, she was convinced that it’s been done aesthetically.Sen, who is part of two stories in Mirch, says all the women in the film, including herself will be shown taking advantage of their wit and intelligence to dupe their men. “These women have a mind of their own,” she says.

Being bold
The actor, last seen in The Japanese Wife (2010), says it was the most difficult role for her, but she wants to keep experimenting. She says, “I enjoy playing bold characters. As an actor if I don’t keep challenging myself with difficult roles, I will get lazy.”
Beaming about the fact that her film Just Another Love Story with Rituparno Ghosh won the jury prize at IFFI recently, Sen says, “Though I am doing quite a few Bengali-English films, I strike a balance with working in Hindi cinema.” She will soon be seen in Rituparno Ghosh’s Memories In March along with Deepti Naval and Subhash Ghai’s Nauka Dubi (Hindi film) along with sister Riya Sen.
