Blog: To the Toms, Dicks and Harrys

When a Labour MP disparagingly reduced the magazine of brains contained in the Cabinet to Tom, Dick and Harry, she expressed her disdain for a culture of mediocrity that characterises leadership in many ministries. If the population has doggedly followed the interventions of the MP concerned, one will find an invariable standard that she follows.

Blog: Tourists and Tourism in Mauritius

One has to go only a few years back when Mauritius known as the ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’ has been boasting itself as one of the best havens for tourists, coming from all over the world. Tourism has been booming and continues doing so to some extent till present day. But one wonders, for how long tourism is going to hold its well-earned reputation under the present climate of increasing crimes in Mauritius?...

Blog: Tolerating Idiots and Morons

The United Nations Human Rights council has recently passed a resolution on Human Rights violations based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The resolution was passed by a vote of 23 in favour, 19 against and 3 abstentions. It is no surprise that some of the countries that voted against include some with the worst records of human rights violations in general and more specifically some with the worst records of discrimination against homosexuals, the likes of Uganda, Saudi Arabia, Russia and others. Mauritius was amongst the 23 countries that voted for....

Blog: Road Traffic Accidents In Mauritius

In a recent speech, Prime Minister N. Ramgoolam stated beside other safety measures that there is a ‘a general lack of control and sense of irresponsibility’ on the part of drivers and pedestrians which is resulting into an increased number of road traffic accidents. But what do we understand by this simple statement? In this short paper I wish to give a somewhat different version from individual as well as societal perspectives to what this may mean in terms of road usage....

Blog: MGI/TJC Caste Controversy Fuss

I have been disturbed and kept wondering at the timing of the totally avoidable and unnecessary controversy between the Mahatma Gandhi Institute (MGI) and the Truth and Justice Commission (TJC) over the issue of access to the archives of Indian immigration dealing with caste and religion....

Blog: Beware ! Truth kills Here

It is not the intention of the writer to provoke a semantic debate on truth as a spiritual quest. But what is truth? It cannot be just what you offer to show me because you may be hiding more than you reveal. Is truth just what should please you? Or is it what pleases me? Is truth an existential fact that tears through the illusion of appearance, belief, concept, wish, expectation, tradition or heritage? Is all truth as clear as the sun that rises in the east?...

Blog: School Attendances - Serious Concerns for Students, Parents and Secondary Schools

According to an article published yesterday 29th of June, 2011 the Ministry of Education, headed by Mr Vasant Banwaree, introduced a recommendation stating that any student failing to attend less than 80% of their course/class contacts in their preparatory year(s) will not be allowed to take their SC/HSC exams. While this may well be good intentioned I shall not endorse this as a right course of action to promote attendances, as an educator....

Blog : The remedy to bad speech is good speech, not censorship!

Last week self-mutilation carried out by several students of a primary school grabbed the headlines among several media organisations. Some pointed out to a potential connection to self-harm activities performed by Marilyn Manson on stage in front on ‘impressionable teenagers’ but failed to remind the readers of Manson’s answer to his fans mutilating themselves: “I never said be like me. I say be like you and make a difference”....

Blog: Children sacrificed at the Altar of a soulless Competition

Children are being used by unscrupulous adults to push perverse ideologies to strengthen their sects. It is important to imagine that students of CPE of a primary school found in a very sophisticated part of Plaine-Wilhems understand the philosophy of satanism and the importance of self-mutilation as a heightened vehicle of communion with the power of evil. I had to spend some time on the Internet to understand the ramifications of Manson`s theory of darkness....

  • Promote inclusiveness by enabling all the citizens to participate fully and benefit from wealth created

Blog: In quest of Fairness and Justice

The need and desire for fairness and justice has never been so pressing and strong as it is today - in all spheres of life. Last week I was horrified to learn that one of the brilliant professionals lost his leg in a car accident. On the eve he had received the termination letter of his job without any serious justification. I had known him personally. He is somebody for whom you can put your hand into fire. I just wish there is no cause and effect....

Blog: Quenching Our Thirst

At last all Mauritians seem to take seriously the problem of shortage of drinking water in the country. If there is no rainfall in the coming days, water supply regime from Mare aux Vacoas reservoir will be only once in two days. If water supply is maintained once a day, there will be no water supply in Plaine Wilhems and other areas from Mare aux Vacoas by November....

Blog: The dysfunctional Family

Crime has been associated with poverty and unemployment. That may be only partially true. In the United States, with increased prosperity and greater employment, crime has risen almost ten times since 1950. With each decade of prosperity and increased employment, the rate of crime doubled. Divorce rate increased, drug and alcohol abuse increased, more families broke down and there were many more cases of childbirth out of wedlock....

Blog: Ryan Giggs’ right to gag the press

Dedicating a picture of Ryan Giggs with only his eyes blocked with a black strip on its front page, the Scottish Sunday Herald of 22 May 2011 said : « Everyone knows that this is the footballer accused of using the courts to keep allegations of a sexual affair secret but we weren’t supposed to tell you about that… »....

Blog: Sex, political Power and Culture
