Blog: Violence against school authorities

These are hard times because nothing seems to stay. We seem to be standing on a floor which is revolving, escalating, sinking in a trough and leveling flat. Our ancient heritage is being dilapidated. Like boys who tease a beehive with a pebble and think they can run faster than the bees dispossessed of a house can fly. We forget that we have ourselves brought up the boys giving them all the freedom we did not enjoy and expecting the same respect that we give to authorities or the elderly. The teasing is ours because we have brought them up with the freedom they have taken.

Blog: Benefits of Hindsight

I was pleasantly surprised at the bold stand taken by Anil Bachoo, Vice-Prime Minister and minister of Public Infrastructure, on the role played by and the help given by sociocultural organizations in favor of victims of the recent flash floods at the Tamil New Year celebrations on Sunday last at IGCIC....

Blog: Meeting parents’ panic

Girls’ parents in the middle class who are responsible for the upbringing of daughters going to secondary schools seem to be living in perpetual fear of loss, of the danger of an act of filial treachery....

Blog: Double-edged sword

Following the Preliminary Report of Mr Geoffrey Robertson on Media Law and Ethics in Mauritius, all that the traditional media and the opposition parties have retained is that there is a necessity for a Freedom of Information Act. No one in the traditional press or in the opposition has spoken about responsible journalism, the Code of Conduct and the ethics of journalism, the right to have a comprehensive privacy law to protect, wherever this is justified, the media from intruding in the lives of people or to go under women’s skirts or their bedroom....

Blog: Shame!

I do understand the outburst of hatred of Sir Anerood Jugnauth and Pravind Jugnauth for socio-cultural organizations. They are fully frustrated at no longer being invited and given a place of honor by these organizations at their functions. During their long years of tenure at the helm of affairs, they had enjoyed fully that honor and privilege. They had relied on their continued support since Sir Anerood Jugnauth resigned and became leader of the MMM/MSM remake. The socio-cultural organizations in their wisdom decided to support Navin Ramgoolam and the government....

Blog: Mauritian solidarity must be respected

We have been looking for it in languages and we have seen each child going his way to his Asian language class. The Oriental language group is still looked down upon despite years of cohabitation or because of it. We have been looking for patriotism in our school curricula and we have gradually banished from them all the footprints that have marked the making of a national spirit....

Blog: Media Law and Ethics in Mauritius

The event of last week was the decision of the Director of Public Prosecutions not to prosecute Ms. Maya Hanoomanjee. It would appear that from her interview in the media that the former minister will soon take her vengeance against individuals or possibly institutions that she holds responsible for her ordeal. And that she would come back as minister. We wish her all the best of luck....

Blog: Anil Bachoo - Target of cheap politics

I am just wondering why the opposition is targeting Anil Bachoo, Minister of Public Infrastructure, by asking for his resignation in the aftermath of the flash floods in Port Louis on Saturday 30th March. The opposition is holding him responsible for the tragedy of loss of life and damages to property....

Blog: Era of hoax and deception

We are living a long drawn period of hoodwinking and deceit at the hands of sharpminded and highly educated confidence tricksters at global level. After Bernard Madoff’s Ponzi scheme, we have seen the fraud of B.Ramalinga Raju, the disgraced founder of Satyam. It is sad that even after his fraud was exposed, he continued receiving the support of many employees who believed in their boss....

Blog: Only two hours

It took only two hours for the fury of Mother Nature to bring national tragedy on Saturday last. With 152 mm of downpour disaster of unimaginable magnitude struck the country. Eleven persons lost their lives in a flash flood in Port Louis. Many regions particularly canal Dayot, Tranquebar, Sable Noir were devastated with several meters of water, mud and other debris. No loss of life in those regions except for one who died with emotional shock. The maximum number of deaths happened in an underground parking and in Caudan Water Front subways....

Blog: The Opposition Crusade Against Mother Nature

The flash flood that has brought so much havoc and tragedy to Mauritius is an unprecedented phenomenon. The time is to look towards the future through a rational and dispassionate analysis of the causes that led to that disaster. Instead the Opposition is trying to derive political capital out of human tragedy....

Blog: Courageous move

Kudos to Shakeel Mohammed, Minister of Labour and Industrial Relations. In spite of fierce opposition from trade unions and employers, he went ahead to present the Employment Relations (amendment) Bill 2013 and the Employment Rights (amendment) Bill 2013 in parliament on Tuesday. After moving the bill to be read a second time, the only concession he made was to accept that the debates be adjourned to next Tuesday to allow the opposition more time to participate fully in the pure tradition of parliamentary democracy....

Blog: The Nandanee or Power Obsession

Sir Anerood Anerood Jugnauth has been investigating the circumstances of the purchase of the property of Ms. Nandanee Soornack and promised to come out with information that would embarrass Navin Ramgoolam. Then he made a statement at one of those boring press conferences that only the traditional press relishes in. He seems to allege that no money was paid for the purchase of the property and that the consideration for the purchase was the granting of the inclusion of lands belonging to the vendor, Mr. Maingard within the Outline Planning Scheme of Black River....

Blog: … While the police squabbled over jurisdiction

The BBC has a report that is stinging about the bureaucratic reaction of policemen in post when they were confronted with the task of providing immediate and urgent assistance to the lady student of Physiotherapy who was raped by six beasts in the guise of humans in a Delhi bus a few weeks ago. Where was the rape committed? Where does the owner of the bus live? Which Police station should take administrative care of the case?...

Blog: Women of distinction in Mauritius

I have completed a little over two years in Mauritius. My responsibilities as the National Security Advisor does not entail to follow society related developments but the pro active role by the women in Mauritius can not easily escape my notice. Yes, they are a vibrant lot and doing very well in various streams of society....

Blog: Children of Freedom

Is it not amazing how we Mauritians have all embraced freedom? Only 45 years ago, in a bitterly fought general election to determine independence of our country, some 44% of our brothers and sisters voted against. The other day at Ilot on the occasion of the celebrations of the 45th anniversary of independence, the Prime Minister explained that they were misled by those who did not want to part with their privileges and domination....

Blog: How far have feminists been successful?

Women today are shy of being called feminists because of the negative stereotypes associated with the word. While universal, unconditional women’s suffrage, equal pay for equal work laws, educational rights, diminishment of mandatory gender roles, are among the victories of cultural feminism, there are areas like the absence of power over reproductive rights, the number of sexual assault and harassment cases which indicate more concretely the intrinsic inadequacy of the freedom for equality which feminism is expected to bring....

Blog: It’s war!

The leader of the Labour Party, Navin Ramgoolam, has declared war against the opposition particularly Sir Anerood Jugnauth and his son Pravind and the traditional media. It is a political war, but still war....

Blog: An eye for an eye…

After weeks of living in that comfort zone that the Ramgoolam regime was coming to an end soon the traditional press, an ardent supporter of the MMM and whatever group supports the MMM, the opposition, Sir Anerood Jugnauth, the bloggers who are experts at potted thinking, are now having to revise their view in the wake of the Labour Party Congress held last Sunday....

Blog: What society expects from leaders

The world offers a wide variety of specimens of leaders. While many inherit the vices that power or absolute power can proliferate in terms of management of self and delegated authority, a few stand out because many combine qualities that make them rise above the stereotype....
