Blog: Looking for Scapegoats?

The recent arrest by ICAC of two top officials of the Valuation Office and the going back of government on the decision of the National Transport Authority to impose registration plates for all vehicles according to British standards as from 1st July raise some pertinent issues on separation of powers between the executive (civil servants) and the political masters (ministers)....

Blog: Double Talk

While we publicly profess ourselves to be soldiers crusading against corruption in utter compliance with rules and procedures, our own ranks contain persons who slyly violate the very rules they call sacred outside but blaspheme behind public eye. The Gaming Regulatory Authority has not been consulted to carry out a World Poker contest. The Tourism Authority and the MTPA have joined forces to represent law and order and the rule of justice....

Blog: Open letter to the Prime Minister

Dear Prime Minister

I wish to congratulate you for the recent legislation passed by your government, under your leadership on the Energy Efficiency Bill. The only hiccup is that this long awaited piece of legislation is coming ages after you have driven through your brilliant MID initiative and the eminent professor Joel de Rosnay - who came to Mauritius at your personal initiative - had already 'tirer la sonnette d'alarme'.

Blog: Energy Efficiency - A Must

This week, oil prices have reached an all time record since the last two and a half years trading at about $120 per barrel. According to experts, the price is not expected to reach the all time record of $ 147 in the near future. However, this price does not give sign of any decrease. Together with the nuclear disaster in Japan and the decision of European and Asian countries to review the development of nuclear energy, the world may be facing a major energy crisis....

Blog: Form III national Assessment

Many projects of educational reform do not go beyond mere show and ostentation. Authorities hide behind lack of personnel and the sophistry of a well fabricated rhetoric to silence any meaningful enquiry. Very successful ideas are bandied, borrowed from the literature of educational reform management. But in actual fact the reform is not sustained and after the period of curiosity, everything goes back to traditional practices....

PM Dr Navin Ramgoolam’s government rocked by the MedPoint mega scandal.

Blog: MedpointGate

In the language of professionals, be it in the accounting or legal profession, any reasonable person would be put on inquiry and subject this new clearly excessive MedPoint valuation of Rs145m to the most rigorous scrutiny, and even reject it outright....

At last, it seems something is being done seriously to tackle inflation. This week, two major decisions have been taken, one by the Bank of Mauritius and the other by the Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Pravind Jugnauth....

Blog: Leaders' Indiscipline

It is a pity that during the 43 years of independence Mauritius has not known many coalitions that have lived through their mandate. In some cases the collapse has been due to the megalomania of certain leaders; in other cases the weakness of government in public opinion has galvanized members of coalitions to claim back their emancipation from the group for better electoral opportunities; and yet in other cases selfish ministers blinded by the fear of failure have undermined the coalition in order to regain their currency in public....

Blog: Quota for the Incompetent

There is an ambivalence in some of the political postures of the PM, so much so that we feel the pressure of the electorate forces him to make statements that run counter to his considered opinions. When crime and violence reaches the threshold of intolerance, he is for capital punishment. His better wisdom, I surmise, will not counsel him towards this option....

Blog: Sujata Tanya - Murder or Infanticide?

In English Law, the Infanticide Act 1938 provides that : « Where a woman by any wilful act or omission causes the death of her child under the age of 12 months, but the balance of her mind was disturbed by reason of her not having fully recovered from the effect of giving birth to the child or by reason of the effect of lactation consequent upon the birth of the child, then … she shall be guilty of … infanticide »....

Blog: Doctors cannot be Doormats

This article does not pretend to follow the routine that the conventional press adopts to cash in on weaknesses in the health system. In fact it aims at understanding that it is not always the Health Minister who is responsible for shortcomings in the dispensation of health service. The country´s institutions are governed by a horde of top leaders who have gravitated to higher rungs of the civil service hierarchy after years of patient service....

Blog: Not to brew a Revolution is not dumb

A Sunday Weekly gives itself the licence to prod Mauritians to a revolution a' la Tunisia and a horde of Arab countries that register an unprecedented insurgence of the people.
