Blog: The Prostitution of Politics
Never in the history of Mauritius have we witnessed such a prostitution of politics. Recent events have shown that the MMM leader is obsessed and guided by one sole consideration and that is power and the seat of Prime Minister. When the MSM abandoned the government it ran into the arms of Paul Bérenger who gladly welcomed that move.
The idea of becoming Prime Minister again with the help of the MSM diluted in the mind of Paul Bérenger the “bombe communale” that Sir Anerood Jugnauth represented and the fact that Pravind Jugnauth was a “cretin” who knew nothing about finance and economy. Then using the alleged move of Maya Hanoomanjee to embarrass Alan Ganoo through a parliamentary question, the meeting of Showkutally Soodhun with Xavier Duval as well as the electoral reforms as a springboard he started negotiations with Navin Ramgoolam.Whether only electoral reforms or a possible political alliance was discussed we will not know but speculations ran high and almost every observer saw the game being played behind closed doors. Then all of a sudden, Paul Bérenger left the Labour bed and is trying to move back to the MSM bed that he had left earlier to cool off. Maybe that bed was too hot for him!
No doubt that this kind of attitude causes people to be fed up with politics. The MMM has been in alliance with the PSM in 1982 and that did not work out. It was in alliance with the MSM in 1991 and that marriage fizzled out because at the time Paul Bérenger was attempting a political adultery with Navin Ramgoolam much to the anger of Sir Anerood Jugnauth.
The MMM was in alliance with the MSM both in 2000 and 2005. The marriage worked in 2000 as it gave birth to the dream of Paul Bérenger to become prime minister. The same alliance was routed by Labour in 2005 and since then Paul Bérenger has realized that there are only two politicians who can clinch victory for him: SAJ or Navin Ramgoolam. This has been his game since the unexpected defeat of 2005 which even saw Pravind Jugnauth biting the dust against a strong Arvin Boolell in constituency no.11.
The MMM is a one man show just like the MSM. In the MMM Paul Bérenger runs the show and SAJ performs that role in the MSM. No member of either of these parties will ever or has ever been able to question or |reverse a decision of its leader and those who did not agree had to go or were expelled.
If Paul Bérenger says an alliance with the MSM is beneficial for the MMM all his stooges will blindly follow suit. If the next day he says the MMM should go with Labour the same stooges will readily agree. The same goes for the MSM. For how long then will the electorate tolerate politicians who cannot have the courage to stand up to their leader and say NO? And these are the same people who will no doubt blindly follow all Cabinet decisions if ever they are in government.
When we look at the manoeuvres of the MMM and the MSM we cannot escape the sad but realistic conclusion that these two opposition parties, especially SAJ, are engaged in a battle of vendetta against Navin Ramgoolam. The latter is pouring his venom on Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, the man who saved his political career in 1983, and on Navin Ramgoolam. To achieve their fathomless ambition they would prostitute politics again as they have done before.
The MMM has lost a golden opportunity of making history through the electoral reforms. The zeal of Paul Bérenger to reform the electoral process when he was in the 2000 MMM/MSM government was dampened by the MSM and Paul Bérenger complied because personal ambition was more important than the electoral reforms. He is making the same mistake again.
And we are asked for our votes to help perpetuate the prostitution of politics at the hands of these people!

Chagos: Conservationists are swimming in murky waters
“Being in Chagos is an incredibly special experience,” says Rachel Jones, deputy team leader of the Aquarium at ZSL London Zoo, in a new YouTube posting extolling the “unique” environment of the warm, pristine waters of the archipelago. “It’s literally like going back in time… It’s what reefs, I imagine, were like 50 or 60 years ago. She adds: “It’s very special being somewhere where you know you’re the only one there. There’s no one else around.”...
Blog: Outrage or no outrage - Sir Gaetan Duval and Pascale Bodet
It appears or it is a reality now that the MMM has two leaders. One is described as the historic leader by the traditional press regularly and he is Paul Berenger. The other one is described as the leader of the opposition coming from the MMM rank and file. The constant reference to the historic leader must be a constant reminder to Alan Ganoo that the traditional press does not want to let go of Paul Berenger. The MSM also has a leader of the remake 2000 in the person of Sir Anerood Jugnauth and a leader of the MSM in the person of the sibling of the leader of the remake. It is quite odd that a coalition that is vowing to boot out the present government out of power and perform economic miracles has four leaders....

I am not supposed to write about you because, apparently, there is a prima facie case against you and you are under a charge allegedly related to a violation of the Equal Opportunities Act.
Blog: Rare Tribute to Unsung Heroes
It is very rare that unanimous tribute is paid to unsung heroes for their brave heroic actions. The last opinion poll carried out by Politis and published in l'express of last Sunday indicates that the leader of the Labour Party, Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam polls 58% approval, Paul Berenger, the leader of the MMM 56% and Anerood Jugnauth the leader of the so-called remake 2000 gets about 46% and comes behind Arvin Boolell with 51% and Xavier Duval 48%....
Blog: Navin Ramgoolam The Game Changer
Who could have imagined that Labour Party would not celebrate Labour Day on 1 May each year? Yet it did so this year. In fact, since last year, Navin Ramgoolam wanted to do away with the political rally on that day. The mourning of the country after the death of 11 persons during the flashfloods on March 30 made him decide to go ahead....
Blog: Violence against school authorities
These are hard times because nothing seems to stay. We seem to be standing on a floor which is revolving, escalating, sinking in a trough and leveling flat. Our ancient heritage is being dilapidated. Like boys who tease a beehive with a pebble and think they can run faster than the bees dispossessed of a house can fly. We forget that we have ourselves brought up the boys giving them all the freedom we did not enjoy and expecting the same respect that we give to authorities or the elderly. The teasing is ours because we have brought them up with the freedom they have taken....

Blog: Double-edged sword
Following the Preliminary Report of Mr Geoffrey Robertson on Media Law and Ethics in Mauritius, all that the traditional media and the opposition parties have retained is that there is a necessity for a Freedom of Information Act. No one in the traditional press or in the opposition has spoken about responsible journalism, the Code of Conduct and the ethics of journalism, the right to have a comprehensive privacy law to protect, wherever this is justified, the media from intruding in the lives of people or to go under women’s skirts or their bedroom....
Blog: Shame!
I do understand the outburst of hatred of Sir Anerood Jugnauth and Pravind Jugnauth for socio-cultural organizations. They are fully frustrated at no longer being invited and given a place of honor by these organizations at their functions. During their long years of tenure at the helm of affairs, they had enjoyed fully that honor and privilege. They had relied on their continued support since Sir Anerood Jugnauth resigned and became leader of the MMM/MSM remake. The socio-cultural organizations in their wisdom decided to support Navin Ramgoolam and the government....

We have been looking for it in languages and we have seen each child going his way to his Asian language class. The Oriental language group is still looked down upon despite years of cohabitation or because of it. We have been looking for patriotism in our school curricula and we have gradually banished from them all the footprints that have marked the making of a national spirit....
