Blog: Open letter to the Prime Minister
Dear Prime Minister
I wish to congratulate you for the recent legislation passed by your government, under your leadership on the Energy Efficiency Bill. The only hiccup is that this long awaited piece of legislation is coming ages after you have driven through your brilliant MID initiative and the eminent professor Joel de Rosnay - who came to Mauritius at your personal initiative - had already 'tirer la sonnette d'alarme'.
A piece of legislation that could have hardly taken a couple of month to draft has taken so long then I wonder Prime Minister, when your dream to make of Mauritius a model for green energy - a testing model for the world as Professor de Rosnay coined it so nicely - will become a reality; may be in 20 years, or when our national electric utility (CEB) faces a crisis in meeting the country's energy demand, or when the price of petrol hits its very high point. It appears that some people who have been mandated to undertake the necessary tasks to make your vision become a reality are not delivering. Or should we understand that the IPP's have their ambassadors somewhere to purposely cause delay to any green energy production initiative?
The world is moving fast; we will be left behind and will not be able to establish ourselves as the role model for green energy. Do we want to miss out on such an opportunity? Who has forgotten our recent reference established in terms of Welfare State - which was coincidentally introduced by the Labour Government soon after the independence - which is now cited as a world reference by Nobel Prize Winner, an example from which even the US should learn.
It will be saddening for all of us Prime Minister if we are to beat about the bush before kick-starting our green energy journey. Just get rid of all those untrustworthy people around you who are for their own interests putting the future of this country at stake.
The future generations will be very grateful of you.
An optimistic young Mauritian professional
