Blog: Outrage or no outrage - Sir Gaetan Duval and Pascale Bodet

It appears or it is a reality now that the MMM has two leaders. One is described as the historic leader by the traditional press regularly and he is Paul Berenger. The other one is described as the leader of the opposition coming from the MMM rank and file. The constant reference to the historic leader must be a constant reminder to Alan Ganoo that the traditional press does not want to let go of Paul Berenger. The MSM also has a leader of the remake 2000 in the person of Sir Anerood Jugnauth and a leader of the MSM in the person of the sibling of the leader of the remake. It is quite odd that a coalition that is vowing to boot out the present government out of power and perform economic miracles has four leaders.

Blog: Abuse of Democracy

Following the publication of the opinion poll that showed  the Labour Party and its leader Navin Ramgoolam were still enjoying a comfortable measure of support in the country Rajesh Bhagwan was violently critical of the daily, l’Express, and boldly stated that that paper had lost all credibility....

Blog: Navin, Paul and Arvin

The last opinion poll carried out by Politis and published in l'express of last Sunday indicates that the leader of the Labour Party, Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam polls 58% approval, Paul Berenger, the leader of the MMM 56% and Anerood Jugnauth the leader of the so-called remake 2000 gets about 46% and comes behind Arvin Boolell with 51% and Xavier Duval 48%....

Blog: Double-edged sword

Following the Preliminary Report of Mr Geoffrey Robertson on Media Law and Ethics in Mauritius, all that the traditional media and the opposition parties have retained is that there is a necessity for a Freedom of Information Act. No one in the traditional press or in the opposition has spoken about responsible journalism, the Code of Conduct and the ethics of journalism, the right to have a comprehensive privacy law to protect, wherever this is justified, the media from intruding in the lives of people or to go under women’s skirts or their bedroom....

Blog: The Opposition Crusade Against Mother Nature

The flash flood that has brought so much havoc and tragedy to Mauritius is an unprecedented phenomenon. The time is to look towards the future through a rational and dispassionate analysis of the causes that led to that disaster. Instead the Opposition is trying to derive political capital out of human tragedy....

Blog: The Nandanee or Power Obsession

Sir Anerood Anerood Jugnauth has been investigating the circumstances of the purchase of the property of Ms. Nandanee Soornack and promised to come out with information that would embarrass Navin Ramgoolam. Then he made a statement at one of those boring press conferences that only the traditional press relishes in. He seems to allege that no money was paid for the purchase of the property and that the consideration for the purchase was the granting of the inclusion of lands belonging to the vendor, Mr. Maingard within the Outline Planning Scheme of Black River....

Blog: An eye for an eye…

After weeks of living in that comfort zone that the Ramgoolam regime was coming to an end soon the traditional press, an ardent supporter of the MMM and whatever group supports the MMM, the opposition, Sir Anerood Jugnauth, the bloggers who are experts at potted thinking, are now having to revise their view in the wake of the Labour Party Congress held last Sunday....

Blog: The Recent Flood and the Real Issues

The recent and ongoing torrential rains have created havoc mainly in the north and the south. Roads, buildings, private residences have been flooded. As is usually the case in Mauritius particularly under a Labour government the traditional press, the opposition and a large chunk of the public squarely put the blame on the government. As if it is the fault of the government that nature has unleashed such copious rains on the country. Surely a MMM/MSM government will have the power and authority to command Mother Nature when rains should come and where....

Blog: The League of Racists

Now that the press has been given a free licence to write on the private life of a Hindu woman and to associate that woman with a high profile politician on mere suppositions and rumours thanks to a judge of its own choosing after dragging Judge Domah in the mud, the traditional press, is having a field day....

Blog: The Systematic Lynching of Nandanee Soornack

Never before in the history of Mauritius have we witnessed such a lynching of a Hindu woman by the press....

Blog: MMMay Day for Justice

Following the injunction issued by Judge Bushan Domah on the private life of Ms Nandanee Soornack and her children the press against which the order was made has found ways and means of going round the order and challenging its legitimacy. The facebook and blog of at least one of the so-called journalists of l'Express is replete with vulgar comments on Ms. Soornack. This betrays a sick mindset on the part of those who would go to any length to intrude in the private lives of others. Journalists seem to be oblivious of the fact that since they are public figures their private lives should also be open to scrutiny....

Blog: Harassment and the Harlot

It all started because a stooge of the MMM who presumably is fond of collecting pictures of women by photographing them in public took pictures of Ms. Nandanee Soornack while she was present at a polling station as a Labour agent. Since then the media, especially l’express and the Mauricien/Weekend groups, have almost lynched Ms Soornack. They have invoked the public interest to drag in the public domain her private life and her business deals. They have made serious accusations that she has been lavished with favours on account of her political affiliations....

Blog: Electoral Bribery

The MMM and especially Sir Anerood Jugnauth as well as their stooges and blind followers in the blogging community have already seen the fact that a vehicle containing foodstuff spotted in a ward in Curepipe is convincing proof of electoral bribery. This the way Mauritius goes. This is a culture that is being propagated by the MMM. It is in the base mentality of the MMM to condemn, attack, insult, convict and sentence many people on mere rumours. Very rarely has the MMM leader ever gone to the police to register a serious allegation of a crime. Paul Bérenger has said he has evidence that two ministers talked to one of the alleged perpetrators in the Gros Derek drug case. Has he gone to the police? Along with Cehl Meeah he has heaped tons of allegations on Minister Aimée? Have they made a formal complaint to the police?...

Blog: Defeat and Victory

The ruling coalition has suffered a defeat but has not been routed. Navin Ramgoolam must accept that fact and extract whatever conclusions and lessons from these results. Paul Bérenger the specialist of hyperboles is talking of a rout (raclée) and is predicting that general elections will come soon. The man Paul Bérenger is never magnanimous in victory just like his stooge Sir Anerood Jugnauth and is never conciliatory in defeat....

Blog: The Putrefaction of the Opposition

Sir Anerood Jugnauth left the office of president to "save" the country. The question that comes to mind is whether he wants to save the country or his son and his empire. What if he passes away tomorrow as we would all, will Mauritius be rudderless? Is Mauritius the property of the Jugnauth clan?...

Blog: The Boomerang Effect of PNQs

Since the date of the Local Government elections has been announced the Opposition has been quite prolific with parliamentary questions. The Leader of the Opposition has made full use of his right to address Private Notice Questions (PNQs) on a number of subjects....

Blog: Budget 2013 - The Gloss and the Reality

The 2013 Budget Speech may appear to have been lacklustre in its delivery but what matters is its substance. Navin Ramgoolam has praised one of his former Ministers of Finance, Rama Sithanen, for having undertaken the appropriate reforms that enabled our economy to be resilient in the teeth of the global financial crunch that is still dogging the USA and Europe....

Blog: Corruption as seen by the Opposition

Paul Bérenger, Pravind Jugnauth and Sir Anerood Jugnauth are obsessed by two issues: power and corruption. They see corruption everywhere when they are in the opposition. Whatever projects are started is tainted with corruption. The latest finding of Pravind Jugnauth is that the contract awarded to a firm in Singapore for the preparation of new identity cards is very suspicious and that this is the latest scandal among others attributed to the present government....

Blog: Municipal Election - Where is the Issue ?

The issue of holding local government elections has been an ongoing debate for some time now. The Local Government Act 1989 and the Local Government Act 2003 were amended to provide for the election of councillors of local authorities to be held in 2011 instead of 2010 and the extension of the mandate of municipal, district and village councillors, currently in office, until 2011....

Blog: The unruly Horses

In the Annual Report of the Pay Research Bureau for 2009 an explanation is given on the establishment and functioning of the PRB. This is what is stated: The Pay Research Bureau (PRB), set up in 1977 as an independent organisation under the aegis of the Prime Minister’s Office, became operational in March 1978. Its main function is to carry out continuous review of Pay and Grading Structures and Conditions of Service in the Public Sector (the Civil Service, Parastatal and other Statutory Bodies, Local Authorities, Rodrigues Regional Assembly) and the Private Secondary Schools....
