Blog: Tired. You Too?

I watch TV, I read newspapers, I listen to radio, sometimes I browse the internet, I am sure most of you do the same, but lately I have started feeling tired of the contents of our radio, TV and newspapers. I do not know if you share the same feelings.

Blog: Rare Tribute to Unsung Heroes

It is very rare that unanimous tribute is paid to unsung heroes for their brave heroic actions. The eye witnesses — the bus conductor and the survivors of the tragic accident at Soreze on Friday 3rd May — are telling the story of the bus driver who saved the lives of so many passengers and those who were found in their vehicles on the highway....

Blog: Navin Ramgoolam The Game Changer

Who could have imagined that Labour Party would not celebrate Labour Day on 1 May each year? Yet it did so this year. In fact, since last year, Navin Ramgoolam wanted to do away with the political rally on that day. The mourning of the country after the death of 11 persons during the flashfloods on March 30 made him decide to go ahead....

Blog: Benefits of Hindsight

I was pleasantly surprised at the bold stand taken by Anil Bachoo, Vice-Prime Minister and minister of Public Infrastructure, on the role played by and the help given by sociocultural organizations in favor of victims of the recent flash floods at the Tamil New Year celebrations on Sunday last at IGCIC....

Blog: Shame!

I do understand the outburst of hatred of Sir Anerood Jugnauth and Pravind Jugnauth for socio-cultural organizations. They are fully frustrated at no longer being invited and given a place of honor by these organizations at their functions. During their long years of tenure at the helm of affairs, they had enjoyed fully that honor and privilege. They had relied on their continued support since Sir Anerood Jugnauth resigned and became leader of the MMM/MSM remake. The socio-cultural organizations in their wisdom decided to support Navin Ramgoolam and the government....

Anil Bachoo

Blog: Anil Bachoo - Target of cheap politics

I am just wondering why the opposition is targeting Anil Bachoo, Minister of Public Infrastructure, by asking for his resignation in the aftermath of the flash floods in Port Louis on Saturday 30th March. The opposition is holding him responsible for the tragedy of loss of life and damages to property....

Blog: Only two hours

It took only two hours for the fury of Mother Nature to bring national tragedy on Saturday last. With 152 mm of downpour disaster of unimaginable magnitude struck the country. Eleven persons lost their lives in a flash flood in Port Louis. Many regions particularly canal Dayot, Tranquebar, Sable Noir were devastated with several meters of water, mud and other debris. No loss of life in those regions except for one who died with emotional shock. The maximum number of deaths happened in an underground parking and in Caudan Water Front subways....

Blog: Courageous move

Kudos to Shakeel Mohammed, Minister of Labour and Industrial Relations. In spite of fierce opposition from trade unions and employers, he went ahead to present the Employment Relations (amendment) Bill 2013 and the Employment Rights (amendment) Bill 2013 in parliament on Tuesday. After moving the bill to be read a second time, the only concession he made was to accept that the debates be adjourned to next Tuesday to allow the opposition more time to participate fully in the pure tradition of parliamentary democracy....

Blog: Children of Freedom

Is it not amazing how we Mauritians have all embraced freedom? Only 45 years ago, in a bitterly fought general election to determine independence of our country, some 44% of our brothers and sisters voted against. The other day at Ilot on the occasion of the celebrations of the 45th anniversary of independence, the Prime Minister explained that they were misled by those who did not want to part with their privileges and domination....

Blog: It’s war!

The leader of the Labour Party, Navin Ramgoolam, has declared war against the opposition particularly Sir Anerood Jugnauth and his son Pravind and the traditional media. It is a political war, but still war....

Blog: Revealed!

If the CT Power project were implemented in 2009, the consumer would have saved Rs 1.2 billion yearly and CEB would have avoided investing Rs 5 billion. The country would have saved more than Rs 8.6 billion. This fact was revealed by Mr. Balraj Naroo, chairman of CEB in a radio interview. The CT Power project would have cost only Rs 7 billion....

Blog: The Mirror

It is so easy to accuse and label the one holding the mirror showing your real face and identity, a racist. And pushing the argument a little further, a casteist, a communalist. Such label sticks. It hurts. Nobody wants to be known as a racist....

Blog: No power shedding! Thanks to coal

I wish all those who are so passionately opposing the CT Power project realize how much harm they are causing to the poor, the SME's, the production machinery of the country, particularly all those involved in export industry. Thousands of jobs and our prosperity depend on electricity produced by coal....

Blog: The Year that was

In December 2012, all workers in this country, both private and public, received at least one month bonus salary. The performing and profitable enterprises gave more. The bonus amounts to more than Rs6.2 billion. As from January 2013, quasi totality employees of the public sector will receive salary as per PRB recommendations. Blog: Yes, Prime Minister

Yes, Prime Minister. I agree with your assessment of the results of the recent village and municipal elections. A close analysis shows that your government still commands the support of the majority of the voters. And Labour and PMSD have made real inroads into the usual strongholds of the MMM....

Blog: Learn to do

This is one of the four pillars of education for this century. It is Dr. Karan Singh, chairman of ICCR and member of the executive board of UNESCO who said so during his recent visit to Mauritius. The other three pillars are: learn to know, learn to save the planet, and learn to live together....
