Blog: Business as usual?

Election after election, whichever party has come to power and formed the government, we have noticed ministers and MPs following a set pattern. The trappings of power take control of their behaviour and they become mere actors. They play their roles as per the established rules of GOE (General Order Establishment) and GOF (General Order Finance) and follow the set procedures as per the prescribed laws and regulations. Nothing wrong as long as they perform and live up to the expectations of the electorate.

Blog: Five years of peace and prosperity

This is the minimum expectation of the Mauritian public from the government after the elections. It is not a tall order. It is feasible in spite of the difficult economic times in the world....

Blog: 2015 - Countdown has started

The danger is that a party which commands 2/3rd majority in parliament goes into complacency. It is natural to celebrate the thumping victory, particularly when it is achieved after so much efforts by one and all. Nobody should forget the lessons which we have learnt during the last campaign....

Blog: New Government - Tremendous Capacity To Do Good

The cabinet which the Prime Minister has reconstituted pursuant to the general elections has tremendous capacity to do good. Nobody can describe better the mission of Ministers than Mahatma Gandhi. His motto has been Service to man is Service to God and his talisman was whether any step which you are going to take in life, if it will benefit the poorest of the poor, then it’s the right step....

Blog: Question of Leadership and Trust

It was just a question of leadership and trust, which swung the balance in favour of Alliance de l'Avenir on May 5 general elections. The results clearly indicate that all issues which the intellectuals have been debating like caste, religion, color etc. or even the programs have hardly played any significant role....

Blog: What a Disgrace!

A.B. Vajpayee, former Prime Minister of India and friend of Mauritius, has said “politicians look like mountains from far but from near they are dwarfs”. This aptly describes Cassam Uteem, my biggest disappointment of this campaign....

Blog: The unfinished Business

History very rarely gives a second chance to learn from our mistake and to correct it. May 5 elections are providing us with an opportunity to correct what I consider to be a mistake committed during independence elections of 1967....

Blog: Highlights of a Programme

The proposal of the Prime Minister to create infrastructure for 70 percent of students to have tertiary education is most forward looking and revolutionary. It is the key to revolutionize Mauritius. There cannot be real progress and development in any field without trained and brain manpower. In spite of free education till tertiary level, we are still lagging behind in providing adequate seats to all those post-HSC/ A Level students....

Blog: Call for Bloc Vote

Last weekend, the Prime Minister attended two functions organized by the Hindu House and the Human Service Trust on Saturday and Sunday respectively. The Hindu House had organized a yaj for peace and prosperity and the Human Service Trust celebrated the 8th anniversary of its Ramayana Mandali Sangh. What struck me was the poise and confidence of Navin Ramgoolam during this campaign, so sure of himself and the clarity of his vision for the future....

Blog: Beware of the reserved forces!

The election on May 5 is not like any other election I have seen since the 1960s. The people are not yet passionately involved until a few weeks ago. And it is for the first time that all the opposition parties had reached a consensus that Navin Ramgoolam should be the Prime Minister for the next five years....

Blog: Potential 60-0 - Feasible?

Potential 60-0. That is the winning spirit. Navin Ramgoolam was right when he declared that l’Alliance de l’Avenir has the potential to win all the seats. Nothing surprising. In Mauritian democracy, this has happened and may also occur again. However, we also know that no battle is won until the last bullet is shot and no election is won until the last ballot is counted....

What are the issues upon which the electorate will be asked to cast their votes for May 5 general elections? What are the major political parties, other parties and independent candidates proposing to deserve the confidence of the electorate? What will motivate the voter to go to the polling station?...
